NATURE OF WORK

The Family Resource Coordinator will work as a member of the district student services team with the primary responsibility of working with minority populations of Watauga County to foster positive relationships and open communication between schools and families so that the students can enroll, learn, and grow.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Foster relationships to increase Hispanic/Latino parental engagement in their child’s education.
  • Provide facilitation/organization of a local network of service providers meeting the needs of Hispanic/Latino students and their families.
  • Participate as a member of various school and community committees to support local initiatives and the safety of students. 
  • Plan and develop parent engagement activities with school staff for minority families.
  • Support existing school programs/activities for English Language Learners (ELLs) or Multilingual Learners (MLLs).
  • Participate as a member of the district student services team.
  • To translate/interpret as needed depending on other job tasks and the school community's needs while supporting other district translator/interpreter(s) for parent-teacher conferences, enrollment, transportation, ELL/MLL parent nights, home visits, or other communication.
  • Monitor the academic progress of minority students and provide necessary support.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

An associate’s degree/equivalent or higher is required. Oral and written literacy (bilingual) in both Spanish and English is required.   

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Must be able to use a variety of equipment and classroom tools such as computers, copiers, calculators, pencils, scissors, equipment for children, etc.  Must be able to exert a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.
  • Requires the ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable, functional, structural, or composite characteristics of data, people, or things.
  • Requires the ability to speak and/or signal people to convey or exchange information.  Includes receiving instructions, assignments, and/or directions from superiors.
  • Requires the ability to read a variety of correspondence, reports, handbooks, forms, lists, etc.  Requires the ability to prepare correspondence, simple reports, forms, instructional materials, etc. using a prescribed format.
  • Requires the ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions; to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagrammatic form; and to deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
  • Requires the ability to record and deliver information, explain procedures, and follow oral and written instructions.  Must be able to communicate effectively and efficiently in a variety of technical or professional languages including medical, legal, and counseling terminology.
  • Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions.  Must be adaptable to performing under stress and when confronted with emergency situations.
  • Requires the ability to talk and hear.
